Hilary Hanson Bruel

Artist Statement:

I am a (re)emerging artist from the Boston area who works with encaustic paint. My multi-layer paintings are studies in color, composition, and texture that highlight the unique properties of the medium, and which are informed by my background in both fine arts and graphic design. Working abstractly allows me to focus on the process of painting, while the resulting piece can evoke a different emotional response from each viewer.

Cindy Kennelly

Artist Statement:

My name is Cindy Kennelly and I adore felting.  Felting is the art of creating items out of raw wool.  As I create each felted piece,  there is always a moment when the wool fibers begin to connectand each time I feel this happen…it takes my breath away. Felting represents a love story to me. Laying out the fibers is similar to the beginning of a relationship. As I gently lay out the soft wool, I wonder, will this relationship work? I look at the colors and the textures of the wool and get a feel for what this relationship will become. As I add in the water and soap, the fibers open up, similar to the early days of a relationship when you tell your stories, your history and you become open and vulnerable. Then the connection happens! The fibers interweave and become a solid fabric. It may have some bumps or some corners that need to be stretched, but those inconsistencies can either be ironed out or better yet accepted as part of the art (relationship). In the end, you have a piece that makes you happy, intrigues your interest, and expands your soul just as a loving relationship does. My felting passion is sustainable and earth friendly. The wool I use is sheared annually from sheep. Most of the dyes I use are organic. My brown wool is created using black walnut and my periwinkle blue is created using echinacea flowers.  I feel fortunate that my felting does not change my carbon footprint on the planet. I use my work as a tool to raise awareness of problems that concern me. I’ve created art that demonstrates my concern for needed climate change and political change. My hope is that my art causes others to pay attention to these issues as well. Most recently I have created items showing that we made it through a very trying time and life is looking up!

“Looking Up!”

Materials: Encaustic, ink on rice paper, mixed media on Panel

Method: Wet Felting and Needle Felting

Dimensions: 24”x22″

Price: $520

Description: If you look closely at this piece, you will see an eye and a ladder among the designs because I feel that things are “looking up.” I created this piece after receiving my first vaccination. I wet felted a merino background, needle felted all of the designs, and then did another wet felt of this to block everything into place.

“A New Day”

Materials: Merino wool and viscose

Method: Wet Felting

Dimensions: 24”x24″

Price: $180

Description: During the pandemic, I felt like we needed to nourish our bodies and minds for a new day. I wet felted the eggs with merino wool and then added some silk to give them a bit of a shine. The borders of the placemat are a bit rough and worn because that was how I was feeling. Everything is stitched onto a checked fabric which reminded me of a diner.  How wonderful that a new day is here!

“In Stitches”

Materials: Merino wool, viscose, thread

Method: Wet Felting

Dimensions: 12”x16″

Price: $70

Description: I created this piece using merino wool. I then hand stitched and machine stitched the piece in various places to provide more texture.

“Royalty”

Materials: Merino wool, Leicester longwool curls, silk hankies, organza, sari silk

Method: Wet Felting

Dimensions: 18”x24″

Price: $160

Description: The textures of this piece are endless. Leicester Longwool sheep provide this curly wool and I hand dyed some organza that I incorporated spreading from left to right across the piece. The center of the circles are deep purple silk hankies. Sari silk provides the pink color and movement across the bottom.

“Passion”

Materials: Merino wool, silk

Method: Wet Felting

Dimensions: 12”x12″

Price: $70

Description:

I wet felted purple and green wool onto a handmade background of silks and wool. Needle felted some finishing touches with black and purple wool.

“Meraki”

Materials: Merino wool, silk

Method: Wet Felting

Dimensions: 24”x26″

Price: $120

Description: This is a Greek work used to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love — when you put “something of yourself” into what you’re doingI feel like I put my heart and soul into my work and therefore this is a perfect name for this. I wet felted the background first and then created the vines and flowers to attach.

Nancy Barkman

Artist Statement:

My pottery is a little eclectic. I get an idea and develop it. I try using the same design on different forms and in different glazes. Then I get a new idea which is can be quite different from the one I was just working on. As time goes on I sometimes return to some earlier work, change it somewhat and repeat the process. Most of my work is pretty much one of a kind, although it often belongs to a “family”.

I love to carve my work and I love runny glazes that pool in different ways. Blues, greens, deep red and brown are my favorites. Sometimes I leave the glaze off part of the design, allowing the toasty brown stoneware to be seen.

All of my pots are made with glazes that are food safe, microwave safe and dishwasher safe. They can go in the oven as long as they start at room temperature and are placed in a cold oven.

I love throwing pots and decorating them. When I’m in the studio I am totally immersed in my work. For a little while I forget about the craziness of the world around me.

You can see and buy my work at the Loading Dock Gallery in Lowell, MA and also at the Carlisle Artisans in Carlisle, MA.  If you would like to contact me directly, www.nancybpottery.com

Margarita Krylova

Artist Statement:

The focus of my work is the inevitable link between humans and the natural world. In my portraiture, nature is both the backdrop for the subject’s experience, as well as an expression of their internal state. Nature becomes a vehicle for soul searching – my subjects return to what makes life possible and connect with an entity that is infinitely more powerful and eternal than any individual and all of society. It is humbling, and perhaps calming, to realize that even at best of times, there is only so much in our control.

Elizabeth Sheehan

Artist Statement:

Elizabeth Sheehan started out as a Boston based artist, who first pursued her BA. in English with a minor in psychology from Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, MA. After receiving her degree, she waited a year and began attending Massachusetts College of Art, where she received her B.F.A. in Painting in the year 1999. She taught art and was a preschool teacher for many years. Her work has been shown in Boston, Cambridge and Dorchester galleries as well as Open Studios in Dorchester and Somerville. She then moved to the Northshore where her work was shown at; Gasworks, SCAM (Salem Collective of Art and Musicians), Salem Arts Association, Marblehead Arts Association and Arcworks at the community Art Center in Peabody. Elizabeth now lives in Lowell, where she is a member of Gallery Z and The Brush Gallery. She has sold many of works to private collectors around The United States. She finds an interesting parallel between the visual arts and the art of letters, particular that which involves poetry. She believes that both involve the use of ordinary images, ideas, that can be juxtaposed in such a way as to somehow become extraordinary. She found herself, as a poet who used words to convey imagery, wanting to create paintings with the same dreamlike quality by combining, fusing and balancing the conceptual with the traditional. It is her hope to create an inner land of mystery, and an opening of the pregnant silence of being where creativity, understanding, wisdom, empathy and celebration may dwell.
